The End
I'm getting out of prison. As of Tuesday, April 5th, I was FINALLY offered a position and will re-enter the workforce on Monday. It feels a little bit like receiving a new kidney. Not that I've ever needed new kidneys, but i do feel like I've gotten a new lease on life. Or at least, that life is no longer on hold. It's strange though. I never thought I'd ever come to regard a job as so integral a part of life, but I guess the older we get the more important work becomes infused with how we view our identity. That's not to say I don't long for the days when i was freshly out of college and the only thing foremost on my mind was "what are we (friends) doing tonight?" But the friends now have all started to get married, we all don't go out as much, and the need to make a "mark" on a career feels more urgent. As much as I'd like to revert back to my carefree early 20's, it just doesn't fit now.
So, for everybody out there under the age of 25.... DO go out every night you can. NEVER turn down an opportunity to act rashly. If you don't like your job - QUIT now while you can and find someting you LOVE to do and do it well. DON'T WAIT! Time creeps up on you far too quickly! And most importantly, if I had one thing to do over again, I would have taken ONE year off while still in my 20's and traveled the world. Preferably alone. Believe it or not, it's not that hard to do, nor is it as expensive as it sounds. I traveled to New Zealand and Australia a couple of years ago and I learned more in those 3 weeks than I did in the decade since I graduated college. I will always regret not following up with those plans. Yes, you will be putting on hold whatever career it is you are currently pursuing, but you will NEVER AGAIN be able to do something as fulfilling or educational. Believe it or not, life does eventually catch up with you....SEIZE THE DAY.
Lastly, I need to 'fess up to a minor fib. When I first started this blog, I never indicated whether I was male or female, but the first comments I got seemed to assume I was male. Which, in retrospect, is kind of interesting if you care about those retro male/female work biases. In any case, I kind of ran with it, so to speak, and kind of assumed that identity. So, I went back and changed all identifiers that would point to "female" and thought it might be interesting to write from a male point of view. Everything else is entirely true, but I tried to "masculinize" the perspective. In reality, I'm a 30 year old female and I apologize in advance if anyone takes offense. And to everyone who did email me your advice, comments and help - thank you. ALL OF IT helped immensely.
